Niemi Audrey Elizabeth Niemi, 80, of Roseville, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2002, at Jones-Harrison Nursing Home in Minneapolis. She was born in Virginia, MN, on May 13, 1921, to Alex and Emmi Niemi. Audrey grew up in Virginia and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1939. She attended nursing school at Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, MN, graduating in 1943. She received a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of MN in 1950. Audrey served as an Army nurse from 1945 to 1946 including overseas duty in the Phillipines, achieving a rank of 1st lieutenant. Audrey worked as a social worker at the University of MN Hospitals for many years until she retired in 1980. She maintained an avid interest in her Finnish heritage and was a member of the Finnish-American society. She was a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Virginia, MN. Survivors include numerous relatives, godchildren, and beloved friends. A memorial service is planned at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Virginia, MN, on April 13, 2002, at 11 am with Pastor Nathan Sager officiating. Memorials preferred to Finn Fest, an annual celebration of culture and scholarship, in care of Carol and David Saarela, 4508 W. 64th St., Edina, MN 55424.
