Sara Lee Edelstein

Edelstein Sara Lee, of St. Louis Park, formerly of Hibbing, died unexpectedly April 1 in Sun City, AZ. Preceded in death by husband, Max; parents, Charles and Bertha (Rutstein) Ginsberg; and several siblings. Born in 1911 in Grand Forks, ND, Sara was the oldest child of a large and loving family. She was a home economics graduate of the University of North Dakota. When Sara married Max Edelstein in 1934, she moved to Hibbing where she worked her charms on his family, nurtured her children and others, and became a mainstay of the family and the community. Sara was noted for her energy, her kindness and the lovely handwork - needlepoint, knitting, crocheting - she shared with many. A Torah cover she made as a young woman for a new synagogue in Grand Forks was featured in a Minnesota Historical Society touring exhibit on Judaism on the prairie. More recently, she made blankets for the homeless in Arizona and Minnesota. Sara did volunteer work for Hadassah and the National Council of Jewish Women and loved to play bridge. Following Max's death, Sara established a scholarship program in Hibbing to train nurse practitioners to work on the Iron Range. Sara is survived by 3 children, Charles R. Edelstein (Sara Jo) and Jean E. Schore of San Francisco and Barbara F. Goldstein (Richard) of Golden Valley; 7 grandchildren, Alex Edelstein, Elizabeth Maher (Kevin), Hugh E. Fisher, Joshua B. Fisher, Michael B. Fisher, Lisa Schore, Mark Schore (Kaoru); and great-grandson, Matthew Schore; brother, Robert, Los Angeles; sisters, Nessa Kellberg of St. Petersburg, FL and Belle May Stern of Seattle; and countless cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral service FRIDAY, 9:30 AM at BETH EL SYNAGOGUE, 5224 W. 26th St., St. Louis Park; Rabbi Robert Kahn presiding. Interment follows in Virginia, MN, next to Max.
