Allen R. Sandvik

Sandvik Allen R. Sandvik, died April 9, 2003 at his Edina home of kidney cancer at the age of 77. Allen retired as chairman of Kerker & Associates Advertising Agency in 1987. He also served as President of the Advertising Agency Council of the Northwest Advertising Golfer's Association. He was a director of People for Parks, a group of volunteer fund-raisers for the Mpls Park and Recreation system, and associate editor of their newspaper. After retirement, he wrote fiction, essays, and magazine articles. His short stories have appeared in literary magazines across the country; several have been selected for anthologies. A collection of his essays, "Time Will Tell But I Can't Wait," was published in 1999. He was a regular columnist for the Edina Sun and a contributing writer for Jazz Notes, the newspaper of the Twin Cities jazz community. "I write," he said, "because it gives me the illusion, at least, that I know what's going on." Al served in the Army Air Corps in WWII as a Second Lieutenant. Born in Mpls, he attended Central High School and was a graduate of the University of Minnesota. He is survived by wife, Lois; children, Scott (Christine), Polly (Mark) Norman, Gretchen (David) Crary, and Peter (Rhonda Miller); 6 grandchildren, Mark IV and Tom Norman, Paul, Ann and Laura Crary, and Christopher Sandvik; mother, Josephine Zima; sister, June Erickson. Memorial service Monday, 11 AM, Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, 50th St. & Vernon at Hwy 100. Private interment Lakewood Cemetery.
