Watson Merlyn E., ``Mert'' age 83, of Anoka died peacefully on March 18, 2002 from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Born March 20, 1918 in Lake City, Minnesota to Roy and Mathilda Watson who preceded him in death. Known by many for his gentle wit and keen sense of humor, he will be missed by those friends and family members whose love he deeply cherished. In 1951 he and his family moved to Anoka where he managed the Gamble's Hardware Store. In 1957 he began his position as Assistant City Manager for the City of Anoka and remained until his retirement in 1982. He was an active member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church and was a retired member of the Anoka Fire Department. He was the last surviving charter member of the Anoka Lions Club and dedicated much of his time to the activities of the Lions Club. He loved bowling, fishing and playing cards with friends. His surviving family includes his loving wife of 61 years, Ruth of Anoka; sister & brother-in-law, Bernice & Ruben Willers of Lake City, MN; daughters & sons-in-law, Mary Scarborough (Steve) and Carol Beckman (Lee) of Anoka; grandchildren, Beth Scarborough and friend David Fisher, Craig Scarborough (Leigh), Sarah Martin (Scott), Nick Beckman (Krista) and John Beckman; great-granddaughters, Kylie, Kendri, Madison and Molly Scarborough and Alyssa, Kaitlin and Megan Beckman. Visitation Wednesday (TODAY) 5-8 PM, Washburn-McReavy Funeral Home, 1827 Coon Rapids Blvd., Coon Rapids, MN, and one hour prior to service at church. Funeral service 11 AM Thursday at Mt Olive Lutheran Church, 700 Western, Anoka, MN. Memorials preferred to Anoka Lions Club, Mt. Olive Lutheran Church or donor's preference.
