Irwin, Muriel Horandt Died peacefully from a stroke, with her two sons and other family members by her side, on August 23, 2014, her 93rd birthday. Muriel was born August 23, 1921 in West New York, NJ to Christopher C. Horandt and Theresa McGuirk Horandt. She grew up in Cliffside Park, NJ, attended Holy Angels HS, Skidmore College and Katharine Gibbs School. She met Martin A. Irwin of Kearny, NJ as a teenager and they were married 7 years later on April, 4, 1943 while Mart was serving in the US Navy. They settled in Bloomfield, NJ and raised their family there. When Mart retired from AT&T in 1988 they moved to Deephaven, MN where their younger son (David) and family lived. Upon Mart's passing in 1999 Muriel moved to Excelsior and resided there for many years. As she aged gracefully, she found she needed more assistance and reluctantly sold her view of Lake Minnetonka in 2012, and resided in senior housing, most recently at Deephaven Woods. She was an avid bridge player. She enjoyed traveling and she continued to travel extensively after Mart's passing. Whether it was travel to Europe, cruise ships in the Caribbean, winters in Hawaii or Arizona, or traveling to visit family, she was always game for trying new places. She made friends wherever she went. Muriel was an avid skier into her 70's, in New England, in Europe and the Rockies. Boating was another interest of hers and only recently found it too difficult to get on and off boats on Lake Minnetonka. Muriel is survived by her two sons, Martin Irwin (Terri) of New Paltz, NY, and David Irwin (Patricia) of Deephaven, MN; 6 grandchildren Christopher, Kimberly, Alexander (Anya), Timothy, David, Jr. (Sarah), and Bradley (Carin); and 10 great grandchildren, Christopher, Nik, Jonas, Sydney, Will, Anna, Luke, Avalyn Muriel, Rowan and Clayton. Ex-daughters-in-law Marylyn Irwin of Minnetonka, MN and Patrice Irwin of Granby, SC. She loved us all passionately, and we loved her, too. A memorial service is planned for late October in Minnesota (details to follow) and interment at George Washington Memorial Park (Paramus, NJ).
