Jay Gordon Lindgren Sr., ``Gordie'', ``Jay''; born 9-20-1911, died 2-08-2002. Survived by wife, Eleanor Hamre Lindgren of Burnsville, MN; four children, Nancy Lindgren Martinson (LeRoy) of Winterhaven, Florida and Park Rapids, MN, Jay Lindgren, Jr. (Margaret Sullivan) of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Mary Lindgren (Larry Wilkens) of Mora, MN and Julie Lindgren Torgerson (Kurt Nordwall) of Eagan, MN; one sister, Marge Ludwig of Mora, MN; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other relatives. Mr. Lindgren grew up and worked in Minneapolis and the area around Luck and Cushing Wisconsin. He volunteered for service in the Navy during World War II. He worked for Minneapolis Cold Storage on Nicollet Island for many years. But the work he was most proud of was while he and Eleanor were employed by the Volunteers of America (VOA). Together they served as group home counselors, first at the Bar None Residential Treatment Center (formerly Bar None Boys Ranch) in Anoka, Minnesota, and later at a girls group home in Golden Valley, MN. They worked for the VOA in Kansas City, Missouri and at several locations in the Twin Cities area, including two area nursing homes where they did social service work. Later they returned to the Bar None Ranch in semi-retirement, but continued to be actively involved with the boys and the day to day activities at the ranch. In 1978 Mr. Lindgren began to lose his vision due to macular degeneration. He adjusted to his blindness with dignity and courage and has lived the last five years of his life at the Minnesota Veterans Home. The family of Jay Gordon Lindgren would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at the Minnesota Veterans Home who cared for him. There will be a memorial service to honor Jay Gordon Lindgren at the Minnesota Veterans Home, 5101 Minnehaha Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN, 55417 (612-721-0600) on Sunday, the 5th of May, 2002 at 4:00 in the afternoon followed by a picnic at Minnehaha Park next to the nursing home.
