Robert Burnett McGrandy

McGrandy Robert Burnett, M.D., 73, of Waltham, MA, formerly of Edina. Professor of Medicine and Nutrition, died Feb. 20. Dr. Robert Burnett McGandy, born in Mpls., grew up in Edina, MN (son of the late Dr. Robert F. McGandy). Graduated Blake School. Went East to Harvard College from which he graduated cum laude in 1951. He went on to Cornell Medical School and then entered the Public Health Service. He next worked with the National Institute of Aging. Thereafter he performed research with the Framingham Heart Study. After earning his Master of Public Health degree at the Harvard School of Public Health, he joined its faculty of its Department of Nutrition. He then did a Pathology Residency at Mallory Institute of Pathology in Boston. His career moved, with that of Dr. Jean Mayer, to Tufts University. There R.B. McGandy had a dual appointment at Tufts Medical School and the School of Nutrition. Taking early retirement, he went to live in Switzerland where he was consultant with the World Health Organization as well as the Universities of both Basel and Zurich. He later returned to Boston to be near children and grandchildren. He died at home of cancer under the care of HealthCare Dimensions Hospice. He is survived by wife, Christine; his sister, Marilyn (nee McGandy) Ryerse & husband William of Edina; his brother, Douglas McGandy; and his children & grandchildren; nephews & nieces.
