Goodell John D., age 94, of St. Paul, died April 4, 2004. Born September 20, 1909 in Omaha, NE, he grew up in NYC, and came to St. Paul in 1941 where he met his future wife, Bernadette Michel. He served in the Navy during WWII and later worked as an engineer. In the 1960s he became a filmmaker and, in 1974, received an Academy Award nomination for his documentary feature, "Always a New Beginning". He was passionate about the game of Go, served as president of the American Go Association, and in 2002 received the organizations's first Edward Lasker Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Goodell is survived by his wife, Bernadette; their five children, Mary, Greg, Tom, Caroline and Dan; and nine grandchildren. Visitation 9:00 AM, Memorial Mass 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 17, at Church of the Holy Childhood, 1435 Midway Pkwy., St. Paul. The Goodell family would like to thank the Lyngblomsten Care Center staff for the warm & thoughtful way that they cared for John.
