Richter, John Twiss born in Roundup, Montana, a life-long resident of Minneapolis and Golden Valley, died holding hands with loved ones on No vember 10, 2017 at the well-lived age of 94. John, a man of integrity and tenacity, was most committed to bettering the lives of others. His service-beyond-self attitude was exemplified by his attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, his service in Europe during WWII and his whole-hearted commitment to Rotary and its mission. Always a creative and forward-thinking problem-solver, whether bringing together people in support of bells for a vacant St. Mark's Cathedral bell tower or creating Breads of the World flours for area stores through his family business, Brechet & Richter Company. John made things happen. He was most proud of his leadership in making the lakes and parks of Hennepin County accessible to everyone, and in building a network of safe bike paths around city lakes. He served on numerous boards and commissions including the Hennepin County Bicycle Advisory Commission and Volunteers of America. John dedicated years to airport noise reduction, serving on multiple committees addressing the issue. With his wife, Martha, he traveled the world with the intention of engaging with and learning from all cultures and people. He will be sorely missed by his daughters Elizabeth, Ruth, and Joan, sons-in-law, Craig and Jim, and his grandchildren, Emma, Madeline, Ben, Anna, Brian, Kevin and step grandsons, Justin and Joshua. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Martha Jane, his companion and true north for just over 52 years. John's passions guided his life. His wish would be for others to dedicate themselves to a cause for which they are passionate. For those who would like to further one of John's causes, donations can be directed to the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board and Rotary Youth Exchange.
