A. Scheffer Lang

Lang A. Scheffer Lang, of St. Paul, age 75, died Jan. 14, 2003. Survived by wife, Patricia S. Hart; mother, Theodora H. Lang, Wayzata; children Sarah Sponheim (Scott), Minneapolis; Jeremy Lang (Michelle), Minneapolis; Phoebe Atwater, San Francisco; and William Lang, Minneapolis; 4 step-children; and 8 grandchildren. A former Federal Railroad Administrator in the U.S. Dept. of Transportation, Scheffer had a long, distinguished career in transportation engineering and management. He began his career with the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad; over the years, he also worked at the New York Central Railroad, the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, the Association of American Railroads, and the Soo Line Railroad; he was a Professor of Civil Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he helped found the M.I.T. Center for Transportation Studies; most recently, he was Chairman of the Board of the Taxi 2000 Corporation. As a resident of the Twin Cities, he was actively involved over the last 22 years with many civic endeavors, including his alma mater, St. Paul Academy-Summit School; the Nature Conservancy; the Citizens League; Planned Parenthood of Minnesota; the Hamm Memorial Psychiatric Clinic; and Twin Cities Academy. Memorial service Friday, January 24, 2 pm at Olivet Congregational Church, 1850 Iglehart Ave., St. Paul. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Nature Conservancy, Planned Parenthood of MN, St. Paul Academy-Summit School or the donor's choice of charity
