Howard, John Richard October 2, 1936 November 11, 2016 John R. Howard, born in St. Paul, Minnesota passed away peacefully in his home in Oakland, CA after a long struggle with ALS. He lived in the Twin Cities most of his young life, graduating from Central High, Macalester College, and getting his M.H.A. from the University of Minnesota. After graduation, he was enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Administrator and served his tour of duty at St. Albans Naval Hospital in New York, where he met his wife Jan. After serving in the military, he came to California and he enjoyed a varied career in hospital administration; starting off at Fresno Community Hospital as an associate administrator, and continuing in Regional Health Planning. He then went on to UCSF as an associate administrator, Vice-President of the College of Podiatric Medicine, and President of California Nevada Methodist Homes. He started a second career and his own business, JRH and Associates, placing people in executive jobs in hospitals, in order to spend more time at home with his family. He retired in 2006. John was very athletic, loved water and snow skiing, and was inducted into the Macalester Hall of Athletic Fame in 2006 for wrestling and track. He was an avid reader, loved coaching the girls in softball, and enjoyed people in general. John is survived by his loving wife, Jan; his two daughters of whom he was extremely proud, Jannine of Pleasant Hill and Jennifer of Oakland; his son-in-law, Jon Segall and two grandsons, Joshua and Jordan Segall, all from Pleasant Hill, CA. He was such a kind, wonderful man who brought these warm qualities and a sparkling smile to all who knew him and he will be greatly missed. A celebration of John's life will be held at Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church, Lafayetta, CA on December 3, 2016, 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Golden West Chapter of ALS or to the Macalester Annual College Fund in support of athletics in his name.
