Monson, David L. of Golden Valley, went home to be with the Lord on June 11, 2016, one week after celebrating his 92nd birthday. Dave was a dear and beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grand-father and will be remembered forever for his kind spirit, infectious smile, strong and independent nature, and deep pride in his Swedish heritage. Dave was born in Duluth on June 4th, 1924 to Swedish immigrant parents. He graduated from Duluth Central High School and served in the United States Army in WWII. Dave was stationed in the South Pacific where on the island of Morotai, he was wounded in action and awarded the Purple Heart. After returning from his military service, Dave enrolled at St. Olaf College where he met his future bride and love of his life, Marguerite Berg. Dave & Marguerite took great pleasure in returning to their alma mater where they enjoyed the many wonderful choral concerts, and never missed a class reunion! Dave made a lifelong career working for Nabisco and loved treating his family and friends to unlimited boxes of Oreos and other delights from the Nabisco warehouse. He gave of his time freely, spending many years as a little league coach instructing his three sons and their teammates. Upon retirement, Dave & Marguerite found much joy in traveling the world together and spending winters in Florida. Dave was a devoted member of Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, and never missed the Augustana Lutheran Church Swedish Christmas service (often times accompanied by grandchildren who embraced this tradition with great delight). He was an active member of the American Swedish Institute and for many years sang in the ASI Male Chorus. Dave and Marguerite traveled to Sweden to visit relatives numerous times. On two different occasions, visits to Sweden were highlighted with Dave and the ASI Male Chorus performing before Swedish audiences. He was committed to being of service and found great fulfillment through volunteering at North Memorial Medical Center and Habitat for Humanity both in Minnesota and Florida. In the last years of his life, nothing brought him more joy than time he spent with his devoted and adoring family. Dave was preceded in death by his parents Gustav Hjalmar and Selma, brothers Carl, John and Helmer, sister Anna Stark, and wife of 64 years, Marguerite. Dave shared on many occasions, that 64 years of marriage was not nearly enough. He is survived by his three sons, Jon (Mary) of Deephaven, Mike (Stacy) of Plymouth, and Daniel, of Robbinsdale; grandchildren Mike (Missy), Hayley (Matt) Stoen, Jonny (Lizzy), Camry (Nate) Crist, Aaron (Rosanna), Tanner and Daniel; great-grand-children Lily, Chase, Ford, Fletcher, Kaira and Miles. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff of Wealshire of Bloomington for their incredible kindness and loving care over the past year. The family invites you to a celebration of Dave's life on Tuesday, June 28th at the Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel 5000 Hwy 100 and W. 50th St., Edina, MN for visitation at 6:00 pm followed by a service at 7:00 pm.
