Davey, Bernice "Bern" (Carlson) Born April 22, 1916 and died May 12, 2016, Bern Christine Davey lived for a century and 20 days in cities across Minnesota. Bern was born in south Minneapolis to Edward and Wilhelmina Johnson. She went to public schools and worked at the Minneapolis Star. Bern married Carl Chester Carlson, a building contractor who served as a city councilman in Brooklyn Center in the 1950s. Bern and Carl lived in an innovative flat-roofed house that he designed on Twin Lake, and raised their three children. Carl died in 1965. In 1971, Bern married Harry Davey, owner-publisher of The Daily Journal in International Falls. Bern and Harry toured the White House together, while Harry was president of the Minnesota Newspaper Association in 1974. They moved to Brainerd after Harry's retirement and became active in the Gun Lake Association, as Harry continued writing for the Associated Press. When Harry died, in 1998, Bern moved back to Minneapolis to be near her children. She died of complications from peripheral artery disease. Bern was among those who tried to leave the world a better place, with five generations of caring, innovative thinkers. Bern was preceded in death by her husbands, Carl Carlson and Harry Davey; son-in-law Art Blair; and granddaughter Christine Vick. She is survived by daughters Jan Blair and Marilyn Vick-Kalar (Ed Kalar); son Bob Carlson (Gail); and Harry's daughter Nancy Haugland (Tom); grandchildren Michele Streitz (Tom); Stacie Nelson (Eric); Tony Blair (Sara); Noel Vick (fiancée Dena); Andrew Vick (Melissa); Joe Carlson (Robin); Wendy Lucore (Brendan); Pam Oveson; Nicole Haugland; and Todd Haugland; 13 great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. Private family services to be held later.
