James Fergusson Hogg

Hogg, James Fergusson 83, of Mpls, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on January 8, 2013, after suffering a sudden stroke. Jim was the beloved husband of Gail Hogg who survives him and a loving and proud patriarch of his three daughters, Delene Lambert, Leslie Pritchett, and Jennifer Lick, his four sons, Bill Hogg, Alan Hogg, Peter Hogg, and Andy Pugh, and their collective eleven grand-children. Jim was born at hone in Eastbourne, New Zealand on August 29, 1929. He studied law at the University of New Zealand, where he earned a bachelor's degree, a bachelor of laws degree, and two master of laws degrees. He came to the United States in 1953 on a Rotary Scholarship and continued his studies at Harvard Law School, where he earned a doctor of juridical science degree, the law school's most advanced degree. Jim was a true renaissance man. Throughout his long life he enjoyed skiing, woodworking, playing the bagpipes and traveling all over the world. He embraced his family and all of his hobbies, but the central passion in his life was his love of teaching and law. Jim taught at the University of Minnesota law school from 1956-1970. He was also a visiting professor of law at Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and the U.S. Naval War College. In 1971, he went into private practice and became a partner at Oppenheimer Wolff and Donnelly. Later, he became associate general counsel at Control Data. In 1985, he was appointed President and Dean of William Mitchell College of Law, a position he held for 10 years. After stepping down as Dean, Jim stayed on as a professor at Mitchell, except for a two-year stint as Dean at Western State College of Law. He finished grading his last set of law school exams early last week. Jim will be remembered as an energetic and engaging teacher and scholar, and a wonderful friend, husband, father, and grandfather. Jim will be missed, but his legacy lives on in his progeny and the thousands of students' lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the James F. Hogg scholarship fund at William Mitchell College of Law. A celebration of Jim's life is being planned for May, 2013.
