Schenker, Carl Richard Jr. Age 63, of Washington, DC, formerly of Minneapolis, died May 31, 2012. Much beloved husband, brother, uncle, colleague and friend. Survived by wife, Susan Sherman Richardson; sisters, Dana (Jon) Schroeder and Noel Schenker of Minneapolis; nephew, Carl Schroeder; nieces, Erin (Scott) Olson, Helen Schroeder, Leigh Shadko and Quinn Shadko; grandniece and grandnephew, Sara and Zachary Olson. Also survived by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and their children. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Richard Schenker, Sr., his mother, Frances Cole Schenker Newell, and his stepfather, Martin E. Newell. Carl was a graduate of Nazareth Hall High School, Stanford University and Stanford Law School, where he was president of the Law Review. He served as a law clerk for Judge Shirley Hufstedler of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and for Justice Lewis Powell of the Supreme Court of the United States before joining the O'Melveny & Myers law firm in 1976. He was the sixth lawyer to join the firm's new Washington office and played a significant role in developing its litigation practice and reputation for excellence. After retiring as a partner, he continued to mentor many young attorneys and devoted time to Civil War scholarship, publishing articles in journals such as Civil War History and North & South. Carl was a lifelong athlete and sports enthusiast, who also loved books, movies, history, photography and adventure travel with his wife, Susan. He was funny, kind, always learning, and always enormously proud and supportive of his nieces and nephews. He deeply loved his wife and his entire family, all of whom adored him in return. He distinguished himself in his career and his life, touched many people, and will be very dearly missed. A memorial service will be held in Washington, DC on Monday, June 11th.
