Raup, Dr. Philip M. of St. Paul, Minnesota, died on July 21 at the age of 97. He was a professor in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics at the University of Minnesota, from 1953 until 1984. Dr. Raup was an internationally recognized expert in land use policy, with a particular focus on the Soviet Union, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and North Africa. He was a forceful champion of the family farm and persuasively advocated policies designed to protect the family farm against encroachments by large corporate farming. Philip Raup was born and raised on a farm in western Kansas in January 1914. He received a BA in economics from the University of Kansas in 1939, followed by an MA (1941) and PhD (1949) in agricultural economics from the University of Wisconsin. Professor Raup mentored several generations of graduate students who are now dispersed across the globe in places as diverse as Nigeria, China, and Germany, including six who served at the World Bank. Philip Raup married Marian Louise Getter in 1941, and was rarely separated from her during their 68 years of marriage. They were active in the Twin Cities Alliance Française (where Marian was a past President), the United Nations Association of Minnesota, and the St. Anthony Park United Church of Christ. He is survived by his three children, Philip Jr. (Marjorie), Martha (Diane) and Gordon (Sandra), by his grandchildren Christopher Raup (Donna), Kaarin MacKinnon (Tom) and Joseph Ward and by great grandchildren Cosima Raup Hill and Roswell MacKinnon. Another grandson, David Raup, died in 1994. Phil Raup will be missed by the hundreds of former students, associates, colleagues, neighbors and family members whose lives he enriched. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm on Saturday, July 30, at the Roseville Memorial Chapel, 2245 Hamline Ave N, Roseville, and from 1 to 2 pm on Sunday, July 31 at the St. Anthony Park United Church of Christ, 2129 Commonwealth Avenue, St. Paul. Memorial Services will be held at the church at 2 pm on Sunday, July 31, with interment at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis the following morning at 9am. ROSEVILLE MEMORIAL 651-631-2727
