Meade, Lee L., Sr. Age 82, of Chaska, MN died peacefully Dec. 29, 2010. Born April 2, 1928 in Alexandra, MN he was an eternal optimist who sought & embraced change during his life is enjoying his eternal home with his Lord. He was a life-long journalist beginning his career as a sports writer with the Litchfield Independent Review, honored by the Army as an award winning editor during the Korean War, became sports editor of the Denver Post & recognized as Sports Writer of the Year by the TX Assn. of Private & Parochial Schools. While at The Post, he was passionate about covering recreational sports & figure skating. He was amongst a group of journalists to cross the "iron-curtain" at the '64 Innsbruck Olympics. Lee worked for the following publications during his storied career; the Meeker County News, St. Cloud Daily Times, West Central MN Daily Tribune, Lafayette Daily Advertiser, Beaumont Enterprise, Lake Charles American Press, Sacramento Bee, Elk Grove Citizen, The Highlander & lastly the River Cities Tribune in Marble Falls. In 1967, he left the Denver Post to join Commissioner George Mikan's staff to establish the American Basketball Association where he implemented the red, white & blue basketball & the statistics which are the model for today's box scores. He helped organize the World Hockey Association, World Team Tennis, the Int'l Basketball Assoc., the Las Vegas Posse football (CFL) & Women's Major League Volleyball. After retiring, Lee & his wife Helen moved to Horseshoe Bay, Texas where he continued to promote local high school sports & pursued his love of genealogy. A U.S. Army Veteran & loving husband, father, grandfather & great grandfather is survived by wife, Helen (Wulf) of 56 years; son Matt & Jodi Meade of Austin, TX daughter Sallye (Curt, Ryan & Nicole) Johnson of Horseshoe Bay, TX daughter Leslie (Greg, Emily, Lauren & Josh) Robertson of Excelsior, MN and daughter Lisa (Dave, Jenna & Calvin) Kirkbride of Chanhassen, MN, granddaughter Jamie (Jason, great grandchildren Avery & Daxton) Clevlen of Austin, TX & granddaughter Jessica & Nathan Myers of San Antonio, TX. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, January 3 at 1:00 with visitation one hour prior at Family of Christ Lutheran Church, 2020 Coulter Blvd., Chanhassen, MN (952-934-5659) with reception immediately following at American Legion 290 Lake Dr. E. Chanhassen, MN. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Helen Meade, 3100 N. Chestnut St., #125, Chaska, MN 55318.
