Matters, Eugene 87, of Sturgeon Lake, MN died the afternoon of September 27 at Mercy Hospital in Moose Lake, MN. He was surrounded by his children, Robert, Seth and Rachel. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Marion and his wife, Elberta. Eugene was born in St. Paul, MN on January 3, 1923 and was a resident of St. Paul for most of his life. He graduated from St. Paul Central High School and held Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from Hamline University and a Master's Degree from the University of Wisconsin. He taught Mathematics at North High School in North Saint Paul for over 30 years, where he was an innovator in curriculum development and a leader in the local education association. Residents of the Grand Avenue neighborhood of St. Paul may recall that he and his wife edited and published the Grand Gazette for over a decade. He had a lifelong devotion to classical music, crossword puzzles and politics. He was also known for his dapper appearance and his meticulous application of English grammar. The family will be receiving visitors on Sunday, October 24 from 2:00 until 4:00 PM at Willwer- scheid Funeral Home at 1167 Grand Avenue in St. Paul. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be given to UNICEF in his name.
