Maddock, James W., Ph.D. 5/14/42 - 7/18/09. Beloved husband, father, friend, mentor, "Grandpa Jim" and Professor Emeritus, University of Minnesota, Jim passed peacefully, with his loving family by his side. He faced 7 years of cancer with courage, dignity and generosity. Jim loved life: his family and friends, fishing, skiing in Colorado, and traveling - especially to Denmark. He enjoyed deep and thoughtful discussions about theory, philosophy - and over the last few years, politics, always providing his incisive perspective. During his 36 years at the University, he was an acclaimed author, writing dozens of articles and several books. He acquired a reputation for being a brilliant, generous teacher and collaborator. Jim was a rare combination of a University of Chicago intellectual and a kind hearted, sensitive human being. He loved his work with students and consultees from all over the country, and was an innovative clinician and wise mentor. Jim was a founder of the University of Minnesota Medical School Program in Human Sexuality, former president of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists, and co-founder, with his wife, of Meta Resources Psychotherapy and Training Institute. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Noel Larson, children Beth Magistad (Steve) and Brian, grandchildren Liam and Luke; siblings Anne Neumann and Larry Maddock, step-mother Sue Maddock. Preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Robert Maddock. A celebration of Jim's life will be held on Sunday, August 16, 2 p.m., at McNeal Hall Atrium, University of Minnesota, 1985 Buford, St. Paul, 55108. Memorials preferred in Jim's name to the Department of Family Social Science, U. of MN, for students. Our sincere thanks to Dr. Tom Ophoven and Dr. John Poterucha, who cared for Jim with respect, honesty and competence, and to Cindy and Sharon from Hospice of the Lakes, who not only cared for Jim but also truly appreciated him. Jim was grateful for the gift of organ donation and encouraged others to become donors. More information about Jim is available at caringbridge.org/visit/….
