Kemper, Alfred Benjamin Ret. Lt. Col. Age 88, of Anoka, formerly of St. Anthony. Born February 27, 1920 in Crete, NE; Passed away February 21, 2009. Preceded in death by brother, Reuben. Survived by beloved wife of 62 years, Marie; sons, Mark (Sue), Craig (Mary Kay) of Austin, TX; daughter, Rosemarie Donlin (Rob); grandchildren, Matthew Kemper (Amanda), Erin Nehring (Eric), Carly Kemper, AnnElise, Paul and Mark Donlin; Karl, Kristen and John Kemper; great-granddaughters, Ella and Addison Kemper; special cousin, Helen Anderson; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Al was a graduate of Dunwoody Institute and a Civil Engineering graduate of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology; He was also a MN and SD licensed professional engineer (P.E.C.E). Al joined the service during WWII in the Army Corps of Engineers. After discharge, he started his career with Hackett and Sons. His career was interrupted with a tour of service in the 109th Engineer Batallion with the Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War. He was appointed State Engineer of SD under Gov. Joe Foss, where he served 12 years. The family then moved to Mpls. He was employed at Dunwoody and the U of M for his remaining career. In semi-retirement the last 20 years, he was chief engineer at Kemper and Associates with his son Mark. He enjoyed woodworking, stamp collecting and telling stories. His biggest joy was his family. Al and Marie loved to travel and visit Texas. He was a loving, kind, gentle, patient man. He led a quiet life and will be greatly missed by family and friends. Funeral service 12:00 Noon, Monday, February 23, 2009 with visitation one hour prior to service at the United Church of Christ in New Brighton, 1000 Long Lake Road @ 694. Interment Black Hills National Cemetery, Fort Meade, SD. Memorials to be directed to Itasca Presbyterian Children's Home of Texas. Arr. Washburn-McReavy Coon Rapids Chapel (763) 767-1000
