Weickert, Laurel P. age 84, of Hopkins, MN, formerly of Perham, MN, died Wednesday, August 20, 2008, peacefully at his home surrounded by his family. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2008, beginning at 11 am at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery, Perham, with Father James Bernauer officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, August 25, at Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, from 4-8 pm with a prayer service at 7 pm. Laurel Paul Weickert was born on June 18, 1924, in Perham, Minnesota, the son of Oscar and Margaret (Fletcher) Weickert. He grew up in Perham and graduated from Perham High School. Laurel served in the United States Navy in WWII as a Navy Sea Bee in the 4th NCB. He returned to Perham following service for his country. He was employed for various jobs and retired from the US Post Office. On March 4, 1946, Laurel was united in marriage to Rose Marie Belka in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Perham. They were blessed with four children, Don, Larry, Diane, and Shari. Laurel moved to Hopkins, MN, in November 2007 to be closer to his kids. However, his heart remained in Perham. Laurel enjoyed duck hunting, deer hunting, fishing in all seasons, and visiting with family and friends. His grandchildren were the pride of his life. He will be dearly missed by his family. Laurel is survived by three children, Don (Esther) Weickert, Shakopee, MN; Diane Weickert, Brooklyn Park, MN; and Shari (Derek) Erickson, Maple Grove, MN; five grandchildren, Steven, Minneapolis, MN; Craig (Wendy), Moorhead, MN; Christopher, Fargo, ND; Morgan, Shakopee, MN; and Mira, Shakopee, MN; two great grandsons, Evan and Eric; one brother, Donald Weickert, Perham, MN; one sister, Patricia Kunza, Champlin, MN; and many other relatives. Preceding Laurel in death are his parents; wife, Rose; son, Larry; two brothers, Jim and John; and one sister, Marilyn Cole. Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, MN, is in charge of the arrangements.
