This service took him to the Mediterranean cities of Rome, Pompeii, and Salerno where he fondly recalled playing volley-ball with the crew and bridge with the Admiral. After his next duty as Medical Officer at the operating base in Norfolk, he transitioned to an era of private family medical practice at the Tyrol Clinic in Minneapolis, MN. In 1984, he began a career in geriatric medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, TX. Passing the boards to certify in geriatric medicine remained one of his proudest accomplishments during his 50-year career in medicine. He became the first board certified geriatrician at the Medical School and the Memorial Health Care System. Through his involvement with a variety of medical boards and organizations, he made his largest impact to medical practice serving the geriatric population of Houston and surrounding areas. He retired in 2013 after serving as an attending physician and Medical Director of nursing homes in Houston, Temple, and Trinity, TX. An avid golfer, he was a member of Hazeltine National Golf Club (MN) and Quail Valley Country Club (TX) where he routinely won and placed in member events & tournaments. When he wasn't playing golf he was watching golf - or college football. He enjoyed working in the garden, playing bridge or completing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. Alan was a member of the Codgers Club at The Hamptons in Tyler and was always happiest when in the presence of family and friends. He would want all to know that when it comes to life, timing is everything!
