McDermott, James Patrick Age 85 of Roseville and recently Woodbury, MN passed away on May 18, 2024 while surrounded by family at Regions Hospital. James was born on January 18, 1939 in Estherville, IA and raised in Mason City, IA. James graduated from the University of Iowa in 1963 and held advanced degrees from the University of St. Thomas. He worked in education first as a teacher before a career of over 30 years working for the MFT and Education Minnesota teacher unions. James was very passionate and knowledgeable in his work for the teachers and the unions he represented. He was active and involved in the MN Civil Liberties Union, Coalition for Censorship and the DFL party for many years. He was an avid reader, supporter of the arts, and history buff. James enjoyed Minnesota sports and especially the MN Twins. He was a dedicated father and rarely missed a sporting event or town ball baseball game over many, many years. James and his wife Martha were world travelers including extensive trips throughout Europe, Japan, Russia, China, and all across the United States. James enjoyed good conversation, a friendly debate, and keeping up on the politics and happenings in the country and the world. Late in life primary progressive aphasia took away many of his personal passions but he was still quick with a smile or friendly expression and connected with people, enjoyed life, his family and especially his grandchildren Sophia and Chase. James was proud of his Irish heritage and brief military service he is survived by his wife of 59 years Martha, son Phillip, and grandchildren Sophia and Chase McDermott. Visitation at Roseville Memorial Chapel (2245 Hamline Ave N, Roseville, MN 55113) from 5-7pm on Thursday, May 30, 2024. Visitation from 11-11:30am and Memorial service from 11:30am-12:30pm at Roseville Memorial Chapel on Friday May 31,2024 and burial service to follow at Roselawn Cemetery.
