Espeland, Shirley Jean May 1935 - December 2023 Shirley Jean Espeland was born to Floyd and Jennie (Vander Pol) Wassink in May 1935 in Edgerton, MN where she was raised. She graduated from high school in 1953 and began her college education at Northwestern College in Orange City, IA and graduated from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD in 1957. She then began her career as a teacher where she served in Bloomington, MN, Manitowoc, WI, Roseville, MN, and Redwood Falls, MN. She lived in St. Paul, MN for the past 22 years. Shirley married Loren J. Espeland in June 1960, in Valders, WI, where Loren was serving his seminary internship. They remained wed until his death in September 2015. Shirley is lovingly remembered by her two children: Mari (Ken Dahlberg) and Leif (Ann), and grandchildren Joseph, Karsten, Paul, Lars and Mats. She is survived by her siblings Von, Lloyd (Virginia), Wayne, Roxie, Rachel, and Curt (Ronna). She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Loren, and brother David. Funeral service will be held at Saint Anthony Park Lutheran Church December 21, with visitation at 10:00, service at 11:00, and lunch at noon. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
