Spell, Joan (Chresand) age 104. Born of Greek immigrant parents and lifelong member of St Mary's Greek Orthodox Church, where she was the first woman to read the epistle for a Sunday liturgy. Determined to be a giver, Joan devoted all her free time to volunteerism. As a teenager, she babysat the neighborhood children free of charge. She sang in her church choir and later taught Sunday School for over a decade. She served as president of the Philoptochos Society, a charitable arm of the church and was Orthodox Church Representative on the Church Women United board. Her interest in the preservation of Minneapolis lakes and parks led to her selection as a groundbreaker for the Lake Harriet Bandshell. She was appointed to (CLIC) Human Development Task Force. She offered her services to the political party of her choice, stuffing envelopes, making phone calls, and driving people with no means of transportation to the polls on election day. She was a devoted wife of 63 years and mother of two daughters. The needs and interests of her family were her highest priorities. She enjoyed concerts, travel, reading, the Minnesota Vikings, and producing authentic Greek cuisine for family and friends. Preceded in death by her husband Peter; parents George and Stathoula Chresand; sister Freda Line; brothers John and Theodore Chresand; and son-in-law Richard Brown. Survived by daughters Sandi Brown and Mary (Kim) Rice; grandchildren Jason Brown (Marta Sibirica); Kelli (Brian) Hrivnak; and David (Punita) Rice; six great-grandchildren; niece Stephanie Netolicky; and special nephews, George, Jim and Tom Chresand. Private funeral services have been held. Memorials preferred to St. Mary's Greek Orthodox Church, 3450 Irving Ave. So., Minneapolis, MN 55408-3334, or donor's choice.
