Niewoehner, Dennis E. age 80, of Edina, died August 31, 2020. He was a physician and long-time Chief in the Pulmonary Section, practicing at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center for 42 years. He was also a Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Dennis received his training at Dartmouth, Harvard, and Case Western Reserve Medical Schools. He was a dedicated clinician, a superb teacher and mentor, an international leader and award-winner in research on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and an expert on large clinical trials. His decades of research shaped the treatment of patients with COPD. Dennis had a wonderful sense of humor, a talent for story-telling, and extraordinary athletic skills. He had a voracious appetite for books and a love of travel. He enjoyed monthly dinners with friends for 40 years, and time with family at their lake house in northern Wisconsin. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Dennis is survived by his wife of 55 years Catherine, daughter Elizabeth (Richard) Pearce, son Christopher (Rachel), grandsons Alexander, Ian, Benjamin and Ethan, and sister Joyce Dahlquist. Services will be held at 10 AM on September 22 in the Memorial Garden at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Edina with live attendance by invitation only. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 4439 W. 50th Street, Edina, MN 55424 and Center for Veterans Research and Education, Attn: Dr. Niewoehner Memorial Fund, 1 Veterans Way (151), Minneapolis, MN 55417.
