Babcock, Madolyn Youse December 11, 1924 - August 19, 2018 Madolyn Youse Babcock was born on December 11, 1924 in Miami, Oklahoma. She was the only child of Clare and Glad (Robinson) Youse, who raised her in Baxter Springs, Kansas. An equestrian, lover of the natural world, a woman of grace, she lived a life full of deeply human connections. Madolyn spent her childhood summers at her cherished family retreat in southeast Kansas. As a young wife and mother, she returned each year with her growing family to loved ones in the region, often bringing friends to share in the summer fun. She continued that powerful tradition this year, enjoying the laughter of children and grandchildren, friends and relatives, rippling waters, horses in the fields, and the music of songbirds. She received her AA degree in 1944, from Stephens College, Columbia, MO. She then attended the University of Minnesota where she received her Masters of Science Degree in Analytical Chemistry, studying under Izaak M. Kolthoff for whom the Chemistry Hall is named. A mentor to his first woman graduate student, Kolthoff became a lifelong friend. In 1950, she married Edmund Page Babcock, who preceded her in death. Their six children survive: Catherine Babcock of Altadena, CA, Anne Babcock Hollowed (John) of Mercer Island Washington, James Babcock (Marisela) of Elk River, MN, Elizabeth Babcock (Michael Grady) of Mercer Island, WA, John Babcock of Anoka, MN, Marcia Montgomery (Hugh) of Bainbridge Island, WA, and 16 grandchildren. Marly and James Beyer, John (Cherish), Madolyn and Thomas Hollowed, Edmund Babcock, Jennifer (Eric Sarai), Erin, Sean, Connor and Catherine Grady, Forrest, Henry and Daniel Babcock, Page and Eliza Montgomery, and two great grandchildren Oliva Sarai and Parker Hollowed. Madolyn and Ed enjoyed an active life and they opened their home as a gathering place for friends and social occasions from annual "BSquared" dancing to choral society events,. Madolyn loved arts and music and enjoyed their autumn excursions to New York City. In their later years, they enthusiastically shared those trips with their children and grandchildren. In their last decades, the Babcocks traveled the world. The Babcocks were members of Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church where Madolyn served in many capacities. While raising her children, she grew increasingly active in the church. First teaching Sunday school and later serving as a member of the Ruth and Naomi Circles, the Board of Trustees, and the Administrative Board of the Church. She was President of the United Methodist Women of Hennepin and a delegate to the National Conference. She traveled twice to Haiti with the Global Mission program's Haiti Partnership.
