Norby, Wayne Aaron Jan. 13, 1927 June 26, 2018 Wayne Aaron Norby passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at home in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. Wayne was an only child born in Hitterdal, Minnesota. After graduating as valedictorian from North High in Minneapolis, he enlisted in the U.S. Army but soon received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy. At West Point, he was a member of the varsity hockey team. After graduating in 1949, he accepted a commission in the U.S. Air Force, joined the Air Weather Service and served in the Korean War as a weather officer. He continued in the Air Weather Service with assignments at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany and Scott AFB in Illinois. After earning his Masters' Degree in mathematics at the University of Illinois, he served on the faculty of the math department at the U.S. Air Force Academy and was instrumental in starting the Academy ice hockey program. Assignments at the Air Command and Staff College in Montgomery, Alabama; the Pentagon and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Washington, DC rounded out his Air Force career. After retiring from the Air Force in 1977, he joined the Central Intelligence Agency and in his retirement years, taught math at Northern Virginia Community College. Wayne took great pride in his children and grandchildren and loved spending time with them. He also enjoyed reading, music and loved to laugh. As an avid hockey fan, he was thrilled to see the Capitals finally bring home the Stanley Cup. Wayne was loved by his wife, two sons, daughter and seven grandchildren. Wayne was preceded in death by his wife Elaine (Lewis) Norby after nearly 60 years of marriage and his parents Corall Norby and Alice (Larson) Norby. Wayne is survived by his oldest son John Norby, his wife Cynthia and their children Aaron and wife Jamie, Andrew and Anne; daughter Karen Wolf, her husband Donald, sons Matthew and Jonathan, and son James (Jim) Norby, his wife Laura and sons Jake and Zach. A burial service for Wayne and Elaine will be held Saturday, August 4, at 1:15 p.m. at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Enter the cemetery at the second gate marked Funeral Cortege and meet in Assembly Area 5 by 1:00. The burial will be followed by a reception at the Intercontinental Hotel at the MSP Airport, 5005 Glumack Drive.
