Nelson, Barbara was born in Chicago on August 12, 1927, met Elmer after he had served in World War II, and at age 20, married him. In a span of four years they had three sons, David, Dan and Dean, and raised them in Minneapolis. They were married 70 years. A Minneapolis real estate agent noticed her affinity for quality decorating and care for others, and invited her to join his realty firm. This launched a long and successful career of matching personalities to places. After retiring, she and Elmer moved to San Diego in 2000 to be near their sons, Dan and Dean, who were teaching at Point Loma Nazarene University. David teaches at Wesley, a University in Connecticut. Barbara died peacefully in her sleep on February 18. Elmer died in September, 2017. Their son Dan died of ALS in 2010. She is survived by her son David (Kim), her son Dean (Marcia), her grandchildren Lauren Nelson, Blake Nelson (Amy) and Vanessa Nelson Trine (Evan), daughter-in-law Jann Nelson Zabriskie (Doug), her sister Joanne Carlson, and her brother Paul Cunningham (Connie). Flowers are welcome; donations may be made to the Writer's Symposium By The Sea at Point Loma Nazarene University. A memorial service will be June 9 at 2 pm in the Ellipse Chapel at San Diego First Church of the Nazarene, 3901 Lomaland Drive, San Diego, 92106.
