A southeast Minnesota nursing home revised its smoking policy after a resident on oxygen was seriously burned in March after lighting up a cigarette, according to a recent report by the state Office of Health Facility Complaints. The office cited the nursing home for neglect of supervision.

The resident of St. Isidore Health Center of Greenwood Prairie in Plainview received the cigarette from a family member who didn't realize that the nursing home staff required the resident to ask staff for a cigarette. "As soon as I lit my cigarette I burst into flames," the resident said, according to the report. The right side of his face suffered second-degree burns. He was treated at a hospital. The resident, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, signed a contract for safe smoking. Read the full report here.
