MILWAUKEE — The Wisconsin National Guard has started calling up members to respond to potential protests related to the fatal shooting of a man by police.
National Guard communications director Maj. Paul Rickert says there's no mission yet, but Guard members will be ready if needed. Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke Jr. requested the Guard's assistance after 74 people were arrested in a weekend protest that blocked Interstate 43.
The April death of Dontre Hamilton has led to a series of protests in Milwaukee. Demonstrators want prosecutors to charge former police officer Christopher Manney in the killing.
The Journal Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/1wVw7ST ) that Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn said Saturday he believes prosecutors could make a decision "sometime in the next few days."
