Man hit and killed by light-rail train at VA hospital stop

February 21, 2011 at 6:41PM

A man waiting on a platform died after being hit by an oncoming light-rail train on the Hiawatha line in south Minneapolis Sunday night, Metro Transit authorities reported.

The incident at the VA Medical Center platform occurred shortly before 6:45 p.m., said John Siqveland, spokesperson for Metro Transit.

He said Metro Transit police are investigating the death. The name of the dead man was not immediately released.

Siqveland said it is unclear what happened on the platform that caused the man to end up in the path of the train. The driver of the train was tested for drugs and alcohol, which is routine. Siqveland said results of the test would be known this week.

Buses were used for a few hours between the Fort Snelling and the 46th Street stations while police investigated. Full service resumed about 10 p.m.

Investigators will use video from the platform to figure out what happened. Police also might interview people who were riding the train, Siqveland said.
