Old Man Winter is not giving up the game. This weekend, a blizzard will rage across a portion of the Great Plains and Upper Midwest. Next week, the entire eastern half of the country will turn much colder than it should be at this time of year.

Let's focus on the snowstorm first. A large area from Colorado and Wyoming to southern Minnesota can expect to get at least 6 inches of snow over the next 48 hours. The heaviest snow (amounts of 12 inches or more) will fall in western Nebraska and southern South Dakota. This area is expected to have a blinding blizzard Saturday afternoon into Sunday; the type of weather on the Great Plains you don't mess with.

Watch for accumulating snow to reach Rockford, Illinois and Madison, Wisconsin Sunday. Minneapolis is also due to get snow out of this beginning Saturday night, but the heaviest band may set up just south of there.
