Details: The next phase of the redevelopment at a key north Minneapolis intersection has begun with the expansion of the nonprofit NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center.

Hennepin County is driving the remake of the intersection of Penn and Plymouth avenues N., spurred by a $67 million investment in an expansion of NorthPoint, which was founded in 1967 as part of the original Pilot City federal anti-poverty program. Now operated by the county, NorthPoint sees about 25,000 patients a year, along with another 14,000 who access social services.

The Estes Funeral Chapel, which has occupied the NorthPoint expansion site since 1962, is moving to a once-vacant, county-owned site across Plymouth Avenue.

Hennepin County officially filed concept plans for the NorthPoint expansion with city planners in October. The plans revealed the project will include two new building additions totaling 104,000 square feet. The larger of the two would be north of the existing 66,000-square-foot facility, with a south addition fronting the Plymouth/Penn intersection.

The building's design from Mobilize Design Architecture and Collaborative Design Group is meant to promote modern wellness concepts. Construction is expected to begin in late 2018.
