Some good friends of ours invited my wife and daughter and I to join them for a solstice party this year. At the time we accepted, my wife Lyra and I figured, "Hey, that sounds like a lot more fun than a Christmas Party!" But as the day drew closer and snow emergencies met 30 mph winds whipping across the Twin Cities, we thought, "Who is crazy enough to party outside during this weather?" Turns out.... US!
So we joined a couple dozen other hearty folks to share poetry and fire in the middle of Lake Harriet today. Though our hands were frozen as we tossed around the skeins of our eternal connections and the hot apple cider was barely warm enough to keep our bodies moving as we lit torches to ward off the sunset on this, the shortest day of the year, we still had enough elan to cheer as our fires burned and our wind-whipped candles floated skyward in their balloons.
Here's to 364 days of more sun and more light: what did YOU do to ward off the season's darkness--or to cheer on the coming of the light?
