Blink Wireless home security video system $99
New generation of cameras works on Wi-Fi

There are plenty of live cam and webcam options for your home or office, but almost all of them require wires. Recent additions to the options, including Blink Wireless Security and HD video monitoring system, can be placed almost anywhere on your property that is covered by Wi-Fi.

This would be an easy system to install for small-business owners who want to keep an eye on their stores or offices after-hours.

The Blink system uses small battery-powered cameras that can be tucked into almost any shelf or mounted in any spot you would like to watch. Only the system's sync module (base station) needs power.

The Blink system is a cinch to set up, and it provides clear images of what it sees.

With wireless, there are limitations to its clip recording method, with delays between five- to 10-second views. Longer clip lengths would be welcome, even at the cost of shorter battery life.

MagicJack Go $60
Call from Europe can be like call from home

MagicJack Go comes in handy if you want to call home from overseas. The device allows you to register a local number (or any area code), slips into a shirt pocket and then, once connected to a Wi-Fi-connected laptop, allows you to call from the four corners of the globe.

Even though you are thousands of miles away, magicJack thinks you are still calling locally because you have a local number, and you are charged accordingly. There's also a magicJack app that allows use through a U.S.-based cellphone. Full local service also is available. There are some minor downsides to the magicJack Go. While call quality is good if you have high-speed Internet service, if you are on a cheapie plan with your cable provider, your calls can sound as if you are in a barrel heading south over Minnehaha Falls. Also, in order for the app to work on the road, it has to be open at all times. Otherwise, incoming calls go directly into voice mail. And if your PC doesn't have a built-in microphone, you have to buy one. If you are making international calls, and your recipient doesn't have a magicJack Go, expect to pay anywhere from 2 cents a minute to Mexico to $2.51 a minute to Antarctica.

McMurdo, here I come.
