Temperatures have not soared to or past the century mark in Phoenix, Ariz.,since June 4. That is definitely not common for Phoenix or any other desertlocation in the Southwest this time of year. Typically, the air heats into thelower 100s on a daily basis. The jet stream being dipped unusually far southfor June kept the blazing heat out of the deserts.Triple-digit heat will make a comeback for some desert towns and cities onThursday. The bubble of heat that has been baking the southern Plains willbulge westward.

Temperatures heating to the century mark, however, will likely not last morethan one day. A storm system will prevent the heat bubble from pressing anyfarther west on Friday and will tap into moisture from the south. As numerousclouds spread overhead as a result, the region will again welcome a lack of100-degree heat. Enough moisture will be present that afternoon thunderstormseven develop over the higher terrain.
