ABOUT THE TRIAL

What's next and what's at stake: Opening statements begin Monday in a trial that is expected to take six weeks. He faces six counts over what prosecutors say was a misuse of $925,000 in campaign donations. If convicted on all six counts, he faces up to 30 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines.

THE WITNESS LIST

The list includes:

• Rielle Hunter, the campaign videographer with whom Edwards had an extramarital affair and child.

• Andrew Young, the former aide who wrote a tell-all book about Edwards.

• Wendy Button, a former Edwards speechwriter who prosecutors claim will show that Edwards knew a wealthy donor was providing money to "support and hide" Hunter. Edwards' team contends that Button might have a book deal.

• Cate Edwards, Edwards' oldest daughter who has a Harvard Law degree. She could provide information about what the family knew and offer insights into campaign strategy.

• Lisa Blue, the widow of Fred Baron, Edwards' former national campaign finance chairman.

• Alex Forger, the longtime lawyer for campaign donor Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, 101, considered too frail to travel.
