The Vikings this afternoon waived rookie tight end AC Leonard.
Leonard, who signed as a rookie free agent after he went undrafted out of Tennessee State, flashed potential as a pass-catcher during spring workouts and early in training camp. But he left practice last Wednesday with what head coach Mike Zimmer described as a headache and hadn't practiced since.
Zimmer has said the Vikings were putting Leonard through medical tests to determine a diagnosis and did not rule out a concussion. Now the team has waived him, though if he clears he could revert to injured reserve if the Vikings gave him a waive/injured designation. We should know more later.
The roster move leaves the Vikings with five tight ends on their 90-man roster: Kyle Rudolph, Rhett Ellison, Chase Ford, Allen Reisner and Mike Higgins. Ford remains on the PUP list after suffering a stress fracture on his right foot. He had been out of a walking boot, but it was back on this morning.
The Vikings now have one open roster spot. We'll see if they add another tight end or someone else.
