Kicking into gearThree films Oscar-nominated in the short films categories were funded by the crowdfunding source Kickstarter. In the documentary short category are "Kings Point," about six members of a retirement community, and "Inocente," the story of a 15-year-old homeless girl who dreams of becoming an artist. In the live-action short category is the Afghanistan-filmed "Buzkashi Boys." Three Kickstarter films were nominated in the past, but not all in one year.

The final reelJohnny Depp's production company is adapting the 1987 young-adult novel "The Magic Hat of Mortimer Wintergreen." ... Anne Hathaway will star in a version of "The Taming of the Shrew" set in 1950s Italy. ... Emma Stone is in talks to star in Guillermo del Toro's "Crimson Peak." ... MGM is looking at a possible sequel to "Hot Tub Time Machine." ... Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon star in the thriller "Mud."
