Jerry Zgoda missed the entire Kevin Garnett era, but he's back covering the Timberwolves after working the beat for their first four seasons two decades ago. In between, he covered a bit of everything: Gopher men's and women's basketball and NCAA athletics, golf, outdoor recreation, sports media and a little Vikings and Twins.

Wolves guard J.J. Barea got warned once, on opening night.

Now, he has received a $5,000 fine from the NBA as part of its crack-down on floppers.

The league fined Barea for staggering backwards after he took a forearm from Dallas' Roddy Beaubois during a Jan. 14 game.

You can see video of the play here.

The league determines such offenses by video review in its offices after the game has been played.

If he is deemed to flop again, the next fine for him will be $10,000.

Meanwhile, here is a quick update from today's practice:

--Center Nikola Pekovic (quad contusion) did not practice.

--Guard Alexey Shved (twisted left ankle) took part in the relatively light practice, but remains questionable for Wednesday's game with Brooklyn. "Alexey did some stuff on the court to try to see how he feels," acting head coach Terry Porter said. "I don't think he's ready yet. We'll see tomorrow."

--Ricky Rubio spent a lot of time after practice today working on his shot, specifically working on getting more arc on the shot, something that has been missing since his return. Then he talked with the media for a good bit about the challenges he has faced in his return from ACL surgery. I'll write more about that for tomorrow's paper.
