Jerry Zgoda missed the entire Kevin Garnett era, but he's back covering the Timberwolves after working the beat for their first four seasons two decades ago. In between, he covered a bit of everything: Gopher men's and women's basketball and NCAA athletics, golf, outdoor recreation, sports media and a little Vikings and Twins.

Ronnie Brewer heads to New York

Another option for the Wolves has decided to go elsewhere. Ronnie Brewer has come to an agreement on a one-year deal with the New York Knicks.

Greetings. Kent Youngblood here, with Jerry Zgoda taking some well-deserved time off.

Today’s news continues an up-and-down offseason for the Timberwolves, who have added some players while missing out on others. The Wolves traded for Chase Budinger, agreed to a two-year deal with Brandon Roy and a multi-year deal with Russian Alexey Shved. Most recently the team came to an agreement on an offer sheet with Boston backup center Greg Stiemsma. Boston, which didn’t have the salary cap room to match the deal to the restricted free agent, formally rescinded its qualifying offer to Stiemsma this week, clearing the way for the deal.

But the team was unable to pry Nicolas Batum away from Portland. Courtney Lee wound up in Boston in a sign-and-trade deal with Houston. And now Brewer is headed to New York.

There are still free agents out there the Wolves could pursue. Dominic McGuire (unrestricted free agent) or Brandon Rush (restricted free agent) would be options, as would Carl Landry (unrestricted).

Meanwhile, forward Andrei Kirilenko, who played in Europe last season, said he hopes to choose a team for his return to the NBA before the Olympics.

By the way, according to Stiemsma’s agent, Mike Naiditch, there doesn’t seem to be any rush to have Stiemsma formally sign the deal the two sides have agreed upon. “We told each other we’ll get this official when it makes sense,” Naiditch said.

That’s about it for now. Have a good afternoon.
