Jerry Zgoda missed the entire Kevin Garnett era, but he's back covering the Timberwolves after working the beat for their first four seasons two decades ago. In between, he covered a bit of everything: Gopher men's and women's basketball and NCAA athletics, golf, outdoor recreation, sports media and a little Vikings and Twins.

Adelman: No plans "right now" to coach next season

Rick Adelman said today that he doesn’t plan on doing anything next NBA season – whenever and whatever that might be – other than take a break from coaching.

At least that’s what he said.

He told the Statesman Journal newspaper in Salem, Ore., “It’s a hard grind in the NBA and I’ve been doing it for 20-plus years. I’m just looking forward to getting away from it.

“Right now I don’t plan on doing anything, just taking some time off.

“I don’t have any plans to (coach) next year, no.”

He spoke at a South Salem country club, where he played host to the 22nd Rick Adelman Golf Classic.

Adelman also dismissed the notion – my notion -- that there has been some mutual interest between him and the Wolves.

“They had me interviewing a couple places that I never even went to,” he said. “It’s all part of it now. If you don’t have a job and you’ve coached in the league, the first thing that happens if a job opens up, they throw the same names out there.

“Sometimes you know things are happening, but until you hear from teams, I don’t believe a lot of things I read.”

OK…

So have usually reliable league sources misled or lied when they told me Adelman was scheduled to come to interview with David Kahn and Glen Taylor in Minnesota but instead talked at some length with Kahn by phone about the team’s vacant coaching job?

Adelman hasn’t returned calls or emails I’ve left for him.

My take:

Yes, he’s right, he never came here.

That doesn’t mean there isn’t some mutual interest.

I don’t believe for a second that the Wolves never called to ask if he’s interested. He does, after all, seem to fit just about everything Kahn claims he is looking for, and there’s that relationship with Kevin Love.

I’m betting he really is debating with himself and discussing with his family if he wants to get back into coaching right away and if this is the kind of job he really wants to tackle at age 65 and he’s waiting to see if the Wolves make him an offer he really can’t refuse.

Adelman took a season off each time after leaving coaching jobs with Portland, Golden State and Sacrament and he told the Salem newspaper that the current labor lockout is another reason to wait.

“The whole league, with the lockout and everything, it’s hard telling what’s going to happen,” he said. “I think they’ll probably end up having a season but it’ll probably be a short one like a few years ago, maybe 50 games or something like that.”

On a different front:

Looks like this will be another quiet week for the Wolves’ search.

They haven’t interviewed anyone since Don Nelson met with Kahn, owner Glen Taylor and the team’s minority partners nine days ago and because of the lockout, they don’t appear to be in any rush.

Kahn went on a tropical vacation last week and he and Taylor are not expected to interview anyone else until Larry Brown and one other unknown candidate.

Both those two interviews likely are set for next week.
