Vikings bring in cornerback for visit

The Vikings could add a second free agent in as many days on Tuesday.

According to NFL sources, cornerback Tye Hill visited Winter Park on Monday and is spending this evening deciding on whether he wants to play in Minnesota or Tennessee next season. Hill was joined on his visit to Eden Prairie by former Packers defensive end Michael Montgomery, who agreed to a one-year deal that is believed to be for around the veteran's minimum of $630,000.

"I'm excited and ready to get rolling," Montgomery said. "Minnesota has a great tradition and this is an [excellent] opportunity." (Asked about possibly re-joining Brett Favre, Montgomery said: "That's always a plus. Brett is a great player and a great locker-room person, a future Hall of Famer. It's always good to be playing with that guy.)

Hill also could see the Vikings in the same way after a disappointing one-year stay with the Atlanta Falcons. The 15th overall pick by St. Louis in 2006, Hill spent his first three seasons with the Rams before being traded to Atlanta for a seventh-round selection shortly before the 2009 season.

He played in only eight games for the Falcons and made three starts, all in November. Hill finished with seven tackles and one interception. He returned that pick, which came against Washington's Jason Campbell, 62 yards for a touchdown.

Hill, who will turn 28 on June 3, played in all 16 games for the Rams in 2006 and made 10 starts but has not played in more than eight games in a single season since that time. He has five career interceptions, including three as a rookie.

The Vikings are looking to add depth at the corner position after starting right cornerback Cedric Griffin suffered an ACL injury in the NFC title game. Griffin could start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Starting left corner Antoine Winfield broke his foot last season and continues to recover from that injury.

The Vikings do have Asher Allen, a third-round pick last April, and also re-signed veteran Benny Sapp, who was used in the nickel before Winfield was injured and ended up making seven starts last year.
