A return to normal?

There should be no more private jets coming into local airports with Vikings players aboard. The need to hold a re-introductory news conference for a guy who doesn't need an introduction also should be passed.

In other words, the Vikings should be able to get on with their lives today and actually focus on ... wait for it ... football.

That's right, the now annual circus that revolves around Brett Favre arrival each Aug. 17 or 18 -- yes, Favre claimed he's going to retire after this year but it might be a good idea to mark your calendars anyway -- is now over for 2010.

The Vikings will be back at Winter Park this morning practicing and getting ready for Sunday night's preseason game at San Francisco. Favre said he wants to play so we're thinking the odds are extremely high that he will get his wish. In fact, I'm sure he will play because NBC is going to carry this game and it's likely a high placed executive at the network already has made a call to the folks who run the NFL and that person has made a call to Winter Park and, well, you get the idea.

About the only thing left to wonder is when wide receiver Sidney Rice (hip) and cornerback Cedric Griffin (knee) will come off the physically unable to perform list. The Vikings also are hoping to get center John Sullivan back. Sullivan has been sidelined for portions of training camp because of what appeared originally to be some type of cut on his calf area.

I'm most interested to see if Rice's recovery speeds up now that Favre is back. There is little doubt that Rice isn't happy about the fact he is due only $550,000 this season but Favre's return might help him begin to feel a little better.

All of the Favre excitement this week caused many to forget that wide receiver Percy Harvin is back on the field after missing a couple of weeks following the death of his grandmother. Migraines also played a role in keeping Harvin away. It's expected Harvin will speak to the media today for the first time since his return. We'll have an update on the blog if that does happen.

By the way, I've gotten a few questions asking when teams will have to make cuts. The first round of cuts to 75 players players will come on Aug. 31 and the second cut to the regular-season limit of 53 players will be on Sept. 4.
