MOBILE, Ala. – Adam Zimmer hasn’t officially joined the Vikings staff, but it would have been hard to tell at the Senior Bowl on Monday.
Vikings coach Mike Zimmer’s son walked around the Senior Bowl weigh-in sporting a Vikings hat and sweater. Adam, who was an assistant defensive backs coach for the Bengals under his father last season, said a deal to bring him to Minnesota is almost complete. Zimmer’s role hasn’t been determined on the Vikings’ staff.
It is believed the Vikings won’t announce any coaching hires until the staff is complete. While Adam likely will hold a position on staff, Mike was at the Senior Bowl attempting to fill out the rest of his staff and getting to know some of the front office scouts.
NFL.com’s Albert Breer reported Saturday that the Vikings have offensive coordinator Norv Turner and defensive coordinator George Edwards already in place.
Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo received a last-minute invitation to the Senior Bowl and replaced Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron for the final roster spot at the position. Yet, he’ll likely be the most talked-about prospect throughout the week.
He was impressive during practices and the East-West Shrine game last week and was one of seven players to receive an invite from that game to the Senior Bowl. Garoppolo ended the South’s first practice on Monday with another nice outing as he continued to work on learning a pro-style offense.
He said the offense at Eastern Illinois was similar to Baylor’s spread offense.
“At first it was a little difficult, but it’s gotten easier and easier every day,” Garoppolo said. “It’s just something I’ve got to keep working with and each day it’ll get easier for me.”
Garoppolo’s stock continues to rise; he is as an at-worst Day 2 quarterback at the moment. He is not paying attention to such projections, even telling his agent not to discuss it with him because it’s a distraction.
He’s sharing reps with Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr on the South squad. Carr has been projected a first-round pick behind Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, Central Florida quarterback Blake Bortles and Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel.
“[Garoppolo’s] very talented, very talented individual,” Jacksonville Jaguars and South head coach Gus Bradley said.
“He sits in the meetings and asks great questions, so I think he’s adjusted really well.”
Garoppolo said he had not had any contact with the Vikings, although he added Vikings fans have shown a lot of interest in him via Twitter.
Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray can’t play at the Senior Bowl because of a torn ACL he suffered during the season. But he still made the trip to Mobile to soak in information from NFL coaches and executives.
Murray watched Monday’s practice on the sideline, but he also has been in attendance at South team meetings under the Jaguars staff.
“He doesn’t have to take notes, he doesn’t have to ask questions and he’s doing that,” Bradley said. “He’s really into it, and I can see in his heart he really wants to perform. The next best thing is for him to come here and that’s what I challenged him.”
