Phil Miller covered three seasons of Twins baseball, but that was at a different ballpark for a different newspaper. Now Miller returns to the baseball beat after joining the Star Tribune as the Gopher football writer in 2010, and he won't miss the dingy dome for a minute. In addition to the Twins and Gophers, Miller covered the Utah Jazz and the NBA for six years at The Salt Lake Tribune.

Pavano exits after getting battered by Cleveland

CLEVELAND -- The Indians were in first place a week ago, but they got swept by the White Sox last weekend and dropped two of three against the Royals, getting outscored in that six-game stretch 48-26.

The Twins are coming off a sweep of Oakland, and they’ll try to keep that momentum going tonight with Carl Pavano on the mound. Drew Butera has been catching him of late, but Ryan Doumit is behind the plate tonight, with Joe Mauer at DH again.

Update: Kyle Waldrop (strained elbow) was activated from the disabled list and optioned to Class AAA Rochester. The Twins released RHP Daryl Thompson to make room on Rochester's rosier for Waldrop, and they also released RHP Brad Thompson (no relation).

Mauer hasn't caught since Monday but could be back there again Saturday, Gardenhire said.
