Startribune.com digital sports editor Howard Sinker used to cover the Twins and now shares season tickets with friends in Section 219 of Target Field. He blogs about baseball from the perspective of a long-time fan who loves the game, doesn’t always believe the hype and likes hearing what others think. Howard sometimes talks about sports with Cathy Wurzer on MPR's Morning Edition.
Before the season, I was complaining about the lack of a new Twins anthem.
The old standby -- We're Gonna Win Twins -- is fine in a let's-pretend-we-crashed-Grandma's-polka-party kind of way. I mean, get the Chmielewski Fun Time Band to play it and you have the right band for the genre. Plus, growing up in Chicago, the music was co-opted into a beer jingle, so I had no idea what I was really listening to back in the day.
I've been neutral on the G.B. Leighton video because at least he tried, even if it suffered from being hyped by the TV guys on FSN who seemed more than a bit confounded about what they were trying to hype. Besides, Leighton's Pickle Park played host to my favorite show of the year -- Marcy Playground's tour date in the Twin Cities.
But now we have something new and something really good.
The Baseball Project, which includes ex-Twin Citian Linda Pitmon, has released "Don't Call Them Twinkies." Craig Finn of The Hold Steady, who grew up in Edina and graduated from Breck, wrote the lyrics and was asked by The Baseball Project to sing lead vocals.
If you go back and look at my preseason post, the first commenter suggested: "Someone give Craig Finn from The Hold Steady a call."
Sometimes, dreams do come true. Finn has written a tribute to then-and-now Twins that rocks.
The Baseball Project, which has been on David Letterman and has a cache of baseball-themed rockers, has created something that should be required listening at Target Field come October 6.
I have another request. The Hold Steady has a concert date in Boston on Oct. 6 and New York City on Oct. 7. Seems like two shows that should be canceled so Craig can be where he should be on those nights -- Games 1 and 2 at Target Field. Maybe the Manny Being Manny tour can fill those dates.
Scroll down to listen -- and sorry about the white space. It came with the html. (Back to baseball soon enough.)
