The Twins could use bullpen help and might take a chance on former Rangers closer Sam Dyson.

Dyson on Friday was designated for assignment by the Rangers, which can happen when one posts a 10.80 ERA over 162/3 innings. And the Twins have expressed interest in the righthander, according to a source with knowledge of the Twins' thinking.

Dyson, 29, was solid for the Rangers in his first season and a half there. He posted a 1.15 ERA in 31 games for Texas in 2015 after coming over in a trade with Marlins on July 31 of that season. Last year, he became the Rangers closer and finished third in the American League with 38 saves. He entered 2017 as the unquestioned closer.

But he blew his first three save opportunities and lost the job. They tried to work with him through his struggles but, in a season in which expectations are high, the Rangers need pitchers who can get outs.

Since he's designated for assignment, Texas has 10 days to trade him, release him or send him to the minors. Indications are that there are a few teams interested, making a trade likely.

The Twins, of course, would have a reclamation project on their hands who is making $3.5 million this year, is out of options and arbitration eligible next season. They already have Ryan Pressly in the minors, trying to rediscover his form. Dyson is likely frustrated over a situation. While a change of scenery is probably needed, how long would it take for the Twins to turn him around?

Still, Dyson throws around 95 miles per hour with heavy sink. If they can get him figured out, he could help the relief corps. The Twins are moving forward with Tyler Duffey, Taylor Rogers and Matt Belisle as their relievers they will use to protect leads and build a bridge to closer Brandon Kintzler. They have been waiting for the flock of relief prospects to reach the majors, but injuries or ineffectiveness - more the former -has slowed their ascent.

Former Rangers executive Thad Levine, now the Twins General Manager, is familiar with Dyson, which will help the Twins determine how hard they will pursue him.
