Morneau leads in early voting for final NL All-Star spot

  • Updated: July 9, 2014 - 8:12 AM

Justin Morneau has taken the early lead among the five candidates for the final spot on the National League All-Star team.

Morneau, the former Twins first baseman who now plays for the Colorado Rockies, told "At this point I feel I've played well enough to be there. Obviously, you hope that's what comes out in the end. But there are other guys that are having great seasons, too. ... It's a tough ride but I feel like to this point it would really be an honor to be on that third-base line and get introduced in that stadium in Minnesota, and be a part of that team."

Chris Sale of the Chicago White Sox is the leader among five pitchers for the final spot on the American League team.

Vote totals have not been announced, although the order among the NL candidates right now is Morneau, Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs, Justin Upton of Atlanta, Anthony Rendon of Washington and Casey McGehee of Miami.

The current American League order has Sale on top, followed by Garrett Richards of the Angels, Rick Porcello of Detroit, Corey Kluber of Cleveland and Dallas Keuchel of Houston.

Balloting ends at 3 p.m. Thursday.
